The Gold Winner of the Style and Colour Trophy 2022 is Shalene Sing from Rolf Offerman Hairdressing in KZN. She is a proud member of the Rolf Offermann Hairdressing Group, one of South Africa’s leading salon groups. Rolf Offermann has always prioritized the needs of his clients, and the philosophy of his business is based on respect. The Group is not only Winner of the Prestigious High Profile L’Oreal Colour Trophy but of the Kerastase Challenge as well. Congratulations to not only Shalene but to her team for the support they have given her!

Hairnews asked Shalene to tell us a bit about herself, her creative development and the excitement of winning such a prestigious Trophy. She was even generous enough to share with us her winning colour and technique!

Can you give us a bit of history on yourself?

I am from the North Coast and have always been a very passionate hairdresser. I started hairdressing at the tender age of 15 where I went to hairdressing school in Stanger.

My very first job in December 1998 (straight out of hairdressing school!) was at Rolf Offermann Hairdressing in Westville at the Blue heights shopping centre and I remember Rolf himself had recently won the colour trophy and some of the stylist had won the Kerastase Challenge as well. I used to be in such awe of them and I used to dream of someday being as good as they were!

Rolf Offernan Group has been a mainstay in my career trajectory, from my beginnings at their Westville salon, to the stunning salon at the Crescent branch in Umhlanga Rocks, and finally to my current fantastic team at the Ballito branch since 2020.

It has been such an honour for me to be with Rolf Offermann and win the Style & Colour Trophy – it’s been the place I was molded into a hairdresser by some of the best hairdressers in the industry. Being one of South Africa’s leading salon groups, Rolf has always prioritised the needs and requests of clients, and what better place to work in than one where the philosophy of business is based on respect not only for the people that work here but also for our clients.

What excited you most about this year’s theme French Edito, and what made you enter?

I had completed an online course (Masters of French Balayage) this year and was absolutely in love with the technique and how seamlessly it would fall with a beautiful graduation from dark to light. It’s such a high impact yet so low maintenance hair colour, and because it’s such a tried and tested technique, I decided to give it my best shot.

What was the inspiration of the look you create on your model?

My inspiration was from our beautiful South African sunset we can always enjoy at the beach, with cool and warm tones cascading together to create those beautiful sunsets. I decided to recreate the look and incorporate it into my final look.

What was your favourite part about preparing for this competition?

Sometimes as hairdressers we forget to recap on the basics and the competition made me go back and really focus on my foundation as a colourist. I knew if I needed to make it to the next round, I had to be at the top of my game! I absolutely loved going through everything I needed to know as a stylist to make sure I was thoroughly prepared! My favourite part of the competition was my own personal growth and becoming a solid and knowledgeable hairdresser whilst planning and preparing for the competition.

Did you learn a lot through your experience in the competition?

I really learned how to balance my time and creativity effectively, as well as learning so much more fully about the brand and the products that are available to us.

What colours did you use? Do you mind sharing the technique with us?

  • I sprayed metal detox and absolute game changer in the hair colour. It prevents breakage up to 87% and is a complementary service we offer at all Rolf Offermann hairdressing stores, so I’m very familiar with the product’s effectiveness.

  • I sectioned the hair using v-shaped sections, doing 2 diagonal back and 1 horizontal tease weave for optimal blend in the hair. This is to emake sure you have to have a strong foundation in order to have a good end result.

  • I used a feather technique for maximum blend insurance. The sides were also done with diagonal back teasy foils and the top of the head, in the horseshoe section, I applied my foils using a brick lay technique working with the fact that my model changed her path often and it gave her the flexibility to wear her hair however she wanted to. On the front hairline I did teasy weaves for that dramatic yet blended look.

  • I decolorised the hair using blonde studio 8 with bonder inside and 20 volume developer at the back and used it with 30 volume developer in the front so it processed faster.

  • I prelightened the hair to an orange undertone and I applied dia light 4.8 on the root area and blended it into a 6.28 and 4.8 equal quantity’s on the mid lengths and blended dia light 5.66 and clear on the ends. I used all my toners with a 9% dia activator.

  • After a full development time I completed the metal detox regime and also applied blondifier treatment on the hair for optimal shine.

  • I styled the hair using Tecni Art Pli and Volume Lift as well as Mythic Oil.

How did you feel when you heard you had won?

I was in absolute disbelief and so grateful! I still sometimes want a reality check to see if it’s really true!

What advice hints and tips for success can you pass on to other stylist who would love to win a major competition one day?

Take the plunge you have got nothing to lose. Never give up on your dreams - enter every year until you get through.

Read the rubric and follow the rules of the competition. It’s never about winning, it’s about becoming the best version of yourself. From a competition like this you learn so much and the growth is incredible. If you can believe it, you will achieve it. Work on yourself all the time and stay abreast of all the new trends and techniques that come out, and be prepared for any opportunity that life might throw at you.

Is there anyone you would like to thank or mention?

I would like to thank every amazing stylist I have had the privilege of working with through the years who I have gained so much knowledge from and continue to, the incredible educators that I have had the honor of gaining so much from your classes. L’Oreal education team I would love to thank for all the love and support throughout the competition, and the Rolf Offermann team, with special respect for every client for trusting me with their hair and allowing me to make a living from something I love doing.

What is your motto for everyday success and happiness as a stylist in the salon?

Work on yourself every day and remain a student for life. And whatever you do, wear comfortable shoes … your back will love you for it!
