EOHCB Competition Tips 2: Prepare and Practice
The EOHCB competitions require you to create a style according to the section rules, within a specified time limit. The section rules will set out what preparation must be done on the hair (i.e. if pre-cutting, pre-colouring is allowed), what you may do during the competition (for example, using hairpieces is allowed or not), and what finished result the judges will look for (is it a creative look, a bridal style, a trendy cut, avant-garde...)
Practice makes perfect, and competitors who do well will have practiced their look before the time, so that you know how long it takes, you know where the problems are, and also you can see how the finished look will appear. Practice really does make perfect and it gives competitors a very important edge.
Plan your look before you practice, and when you practice, set a clock so that you can see how long it takes you, compared to how long you will have on the competition floor. You should find, as you repeat the style, that it becomes easier and you are able to do it faster. Practicing this way also allows you to build muscle memory, which will make the techniques more effortless, as well as neater and quicker.
If possible, ask someone who is an experienced competitor to take a look at your finished style and give you advice and pointers on its finish, balance, appearance, and suitability to the competition section. Getting feedback like this will allow you to adapt the look and work on any problem areas.
